THE REAL ENEMY – Overcoming Apathy In the Defense of Democracy

Less than five months from now we, the people of the United States of America, will either have affirmed our country’s precious values…or we will have trashed them, dishonoring the brave vision of the nation’s founders and the sacrifices of the millions of our countrymen and women who have fought and died defending those ideals.

I implore you to take stock,
        take heart, take action.

The term “existential threat” is losing its potency for overuse, but that’s exactly what we’re up against. A large minority of our fellow Americans have renounced our democratic institutions and lent their blind allegiance to a man who’s all but promised oligarchy and dictatorship, and who clearly admires our worst adversaries’ ruthless rulers.

Yet, if we think this deranged man, this misguided movement, is our worst enemy, we must think again. Our greatest concern should be not for things beyond our control, but for our own lack of focus, the possibility that, while we Democrats and Independents waste our time venting our outrage, the MAGAts are quietly, methodically working their strategy to win (or at least proclaim victory) in November.

We must recognize and solve the problem of indifference, especially among younger voters— one of the voting blocs most essential to Democrats’ success. This isn’t an abstract threat; polls repeatedly show that Trump devotees are far more motivated, far more likely to turn out at the polls than Democrats.* And that many young people feel voting is an exercise in futility.

But we—we Americans who still believe in Democracy and this country’s “shining light on the hill” mantle—are not powerless. There are things every single one of us can do, and do right away.

So I implore you to take stock, take heart and take action.

We know they have cheated, are cheating and will cheat.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

Here’s what we must do:

First, we must know our adversary. Realize they’re unlike any political—and I’m inclined to say moral—affliction ever to infect this great country.

Unswayed by proven facts, the glaring contradiction between their candidate’s pretentions of patriotism and Christian virtue and his actual behavior, or even the man’s unanimous felony convictions, they’ve fallen into lockstep with his march to destroy Democracy. In fact, the more proof of the man’s corruption, the stronger their support.

It’s not by accident that the new right in America has become a force. First, nothing brings and holds people together like fear. Like a common perceived insult. Like a common enemy.

Donald Trump and the brown-nose toadies who enable him have been very effective at stoking these emotions among a class of Americans who believe less in helping those not in their “tribe” than in controlling them. Immigrants, assertive women, non-straight folks, racial minorities, smart people...I could go on.

We know they stick together. We know they now control a significant pseudo-journalistic media network. More disturbingly, we know that they’re being helped by some of our nation’s sworn enemies—China, Russia, Iran and others—all of which desperately hope to turn their most feared adversary into their ally—something the Little Orange Man has all but promised them.

And we know they have cheated, are cheating and will cheat.

More and more potential Democrat voters
            have simply given up.

OUTRAGE TO ACTION
So, knowing what we’re up against, what can we do to save our country from this dimwitted wannabe dictator and his groupies completing the butchering of democratic institutions they began in his first term?

First, I suggest, we need to turn our negative emotions—anger, frustration, discouragement—into a positive vision. Let us imagine how it will feel to restore our nation’s soul. To once again be respected by other nations. And then let us turn that vision into action.

Unlike our opponents’ fear-driven fervor, we progressives are motivated by hope. But let’s face it, hope isn’t quite the motivator that fear is. These people vote.

It’s no secret that, with the demoralizing impact of a polarized populace, a dysfunctional Congress, leaders no longer able to conceal their hypocrisy and corruption—not to mention a democratic candidate who, despite his undeniable policy successes, fails to inspire—more and more potential Democrat voters have simply given up, disappointed with both candidates, or unsure of whether their single votes could make any difference.

Our own personal resolve to vote is a good start, but it’s not enough. As our adversary continues to coalesce around its fears, how do we mobilize those progressive-minded, but disillusioned voters around hope and get them to the polls?

They’ve persuaded somewhere between one and three
percent of letter recipients to actually get out and vote.

A MORE EVOLVED AMERICA
For as long as I can remember, the go-to method for Jane or Joe average citizen to help get out the vote has been “door-knocking,” going house to house, talking with folks, asking them to step up on election day.

But for those of us too thin-skinned to face all the possible rejections—or even rancor—of face-to-face appeals, I’ve discovered the perfect alternative: Vote Forward.

VOTE FORWARD is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization empowering grassroots volunteers to send heartfelt, handwritten letters to unregistered and low-propensity voters in key districts around the country encouraging them to participate in our democracy.

The effort, which just before the last presidential election delivered some 6,000,000 such letters to potential progressive voters in key districts across the country, is evidence based. Analysis of Vote Forward mailing campaigns show they’ve succeeded in persuading somewhere between one and three percent of letter recipients to actually get out and vote. In direct mail that’s a remarkable success rate.

I figure at least six of my letters proved to be
the impetus some reluctant Biden/Harris voters
needed to step up and vote.

10,000,000 LETTERS
Whenever a news story or a negative thought about the existential threat looming over our Democracy starts raising my blood pressure, I just reach for a pen and my stack of Vote Forward letter forms and start writing. More than good therapy, it’s a way to actually make a difference.

And writing letters spares me the stress of having to face strangers on their own doorsteps. I can do it on my own time, day or night; I can do it while I’m traveling; and I know it’s effective.

Prior to the 2020 election I wrote and mailed 600 letters. Of those I figure at least six proved to be the impetus some reluctant Biden/Harris voters needed to step up and vote. That’s probably about six more than I could have convinced in months and months of preachin' to the choir on my blog and in social media rants.

This summer, I’m aiming for at least another 600 letters—so far, to people in Pennsylvania and Michigan. (If Biden’s chances take a big hit, I might just have to up that to 1,000.) And, overall, this year’s much anticipated Vote Forward Big Send (October 29, the day they instruct all of us letter writers to drop our boxes of letters at the post office) aims for a flood of 10,000,000 letters.

Please, won’t you join me? Check out the Vote Forward website. Start out with a list of just five or ten potential voters. If you like it, you can download 20 or 100 at a time. You create your own nonpartisan message describing why voting is important for you. You hand-write a salutation and that message onto the sheet, fold and insert it into an envelope which you then hand address, stamp, seal and store until the day of the Big Send.

C’mon folks, the stakes are literally life or death. But we are not powerless. We can do this!

* In much of the country, most experts agree that Trump is currently ahead. Even here in staunchly Democratic Minnesota, Biden currently holds just a five percentage point lead.

GOVERNANCE BY LAWSUIT – The Only Game trump Knows

Are you ready for the era of governance by lawsuit?

Donald trump’s long-time personal attorney and mentor, mob lawyer Roy Cohn, taught him well how to use the law as an aggressive weapon against the slightest objection or criticism. Now trump has brought his next personal attorney, Michael Cohen—also known for his take-no-prisoners aggression—with him to the White House.

It’s the only strategy—business or personal—trump has ever known. It’s simple. You do whatever you want to do, no matter how unscrupulous.

Someone challenges you? You instantly discredit them to the world with whatever Twitter prattle you want—doesn’t matter how ridiculous. The person sues you? No problem; you just counter-sue them for 100 times the money.

Incredible how many of those pesky little former employees, business dupes, cheated consumers—oh, and women…don’t get me going on women—you can scare away like that.

Just more fodder for this clinically-narcissistic
        child-man's insatiable appetite for attention.

TAINTING A WHITE HOUSE
Nonetheless, at last report, there were still some 75 lawsuits against trump and his businesses with enough staying power to survive, some of which have undoubtedly followed him into the white house.

Gee, do you think being subpoenaed for court appearances and depositions might prove a distraction to the new president? Just ask Bill Clinton. Of course trump would say he loves this shit—and he’d be right. Just more fodder for this clinically-narcissistic child-man’s insatiable appetite for attention.

Besides, all that other “presidenting”—you know, stuff like sensitive diplomacy with world leaders, crafting smart, constructive legislative initiatives, commanding the armed forces with clarity and restraint, serving as a role model for millions of American kids—that crap just bores him.

Trump knows no other way. Dashing the hopes of supporters who’d hoped he might become at least somewhat more disciplined once he was actually in office, he continues to spend a shocking proportion of his time on the defensive. Hunched over his Korean-made Samsung Galaxy smartphone, he scours Twitter for folks he sees as threats to his ego, and crudely disses them.

I know you are, but what am I? And by the way, your mother's a whore.

The man's insecurity knows no bounds. If you won't adore him as he demands, you're the enemy, be you a citizen, a government official—elected or appointed—or even a long-standing, loyal ally of the United States.

So presidential.

Why a President with an Acute Personality Disorder is a Bad Thing

To whom it may concern:
Here’s the dictionary (Apple Dictionary) definition of narcissism:

Excessive or erotic interest in oneself and one's physical appearance.

Psychology: Extreme selfishness, with a grandiose view of one's own
talents and a craving for admiration, as characterizing a personality type.

Psychoanalysis: Self-centeredness arising from failure to distinguish the
self from external objects, either in very young babies or as a feature of
     mental disorder.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) includes these symptoms:

    •    Having an exaggerated sense of self-importance
    •    Expecting to be recognized as superior even without achievements that
         warrant it
    •    Exaggerating your achievements and talents
    •    Being preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty
          or the perfect mate
    •    Believing that you are superior and can only be understood by or associate
          with equally special people
    •    Requiring constant admiration
    •    Having a sense of entitlement
    •    Expecting special favors and unquestioning compliance with your
          expectations
    •    Taking advantage of others to get what you want
    •    Having an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings
          of others
    •    Being envious of others and believing others envy you
    •    Behaving in an arrogant or haughty manner

So, if by some odd chance seeing these very qualities in the most powerful man in the world—the man who, to a great extent, holds your future and that of your kids and grandkids in his hands—doesn’t concern you, consider this. Here are just a few figures of note known to suffer from NPD:

    •    Jim Jones
    •    Saddam Hussein
    •    Joan Crawford
    •    Ike Turner
    •    Lee Harvey Oswald
    •    Donald Trump
    •    Kayne West
    •    Eva Peron
    •    Simon Cowell
    •    Adolph Hitler
    •    Joseph Stalin
    •    Joseph Mengele
    •    Ted Bundy

    •    Heinrich Himmler
    •    Hermann Göromg
    •    Pol Pot
    •    And, by most accounts…yes, you guessed it…Vladimir Putin (Hm-m-m,
          birds of a feather?)

According to evolutionary psychologist Nigel Barber’s article, “Is Narcissism All Bad” in  Psychology Today (Oct. 9, 2014), the social media phenomenon—yes, including Twitter—of the past 15-20 years has served as rocket fuel to both the pervasiveness and seriousness of narcissistic personality disorder.

MentalHealth.com’s outline of the occupational-economic problems associated with NPD includes these:
  • Causes significant impairment in academic, occupational and/or social functioning
  • (Patients) work poorly with others; they are self-centered, can't tolerate criticism or defeat)
So-o-o, you trump-pets out there: any concerns yet about your guy’s qualifications and temperament for the job? Any concerns at all?

Ten Simple Ways to Protest the Trump presidency

Are you feeling as frustrated and powerless as I am over the utter absurdity, the absolute outrage of a Donald Trump presidency? Here are ten simple acts of protest you can use against the soon-to-be loose-cannon, reality-star president of the United States:

1. Refuse to capitalize the title of president in front of the man’s name.

2. Write or call your congressional representatives—whichever side of the aisle they call home—and tell them why you believe Trump’s self-serving, fear-mongering policies are an affront to the time-honored American Values you believe in, and for which so many of our countrymen have fought and died.

Call him out for his outrageous decisions, actions and
comments through whatever means at your disposal.

3. Get out and make a statement with your presence. Make a sign and stand on a busy street corner. Attend one of the inauguration day (and next-day) marches—in Washington DC or one of many other cities throughout the U.S. and around the world.

4. I was going to suggest flying your American flag upside down, but that would demean what the USA stands for, not what Trump stands for. So make your own simple flag or banner—duct tape will do nicely—with a big, bold “T” on it. Then hang that upside down.

5. Follow daily news reports of Trump’s outrageous decisions, actions and comments from sources known for some degree of journalistic integrity. Then call him out for them through whatever means at your disposal—conversations, social media, blogs, etc. (Fight the urge to react to all the man’s taunts—a reaction calculated by Trump and his misinformation squad to spread dissent so thin that it won’t be taken seriously. Pick one or two especially egregious missteps—for example, his refusal to release his tax returns—and go for depth and repetition rather than breadth.)

6. Put your money where your mouth is—by donating to Planned Parenthood, an environmental protection group, a refugee aid program or any organization you believe in which Trump has threatened to gut. Or don’t put your money where his mouth is, by boycotting Trump-related products or services, businesses that carry them, and sponsors of Trump’s media content. There’s even an APP for that.

Pray that this embarrassment to our great nation will
soon be brought down—as have so many tyrants before
    him—by his own excesses.

7. Find and use a “Not My President!” shirt, banner or other public statement of your disgust with everything this charlatan stands for.

8. Use the #NotMyPresident hashtag in your social media posts.

9. Add something like “Latest Trump Embarrassment” as a Signature to appear automatically at the end of every email you send. Keep it up to date with the previous day’s biggest presidential blunder or blather.

10. Pray. Pray that this embarrassment to our great nation will soon be brought down—as have so many tyrants before him—by his own excesses. (Doing so, of course, in a spirit of loving kindness ;-), and realizing we must be Creation’s instruments in bringing about any such change.)

HISSY FIT – How the Trump Chumps Got Their Way While Losing It

Since a crass, bigoted reality-TV star somehow, incredibly, broke and entered the pantheon of the U.S. Presidency, I’ve not hesitated to speak up about my disappointment, my apprehension and my deep embarrassment for our country.

Usually, I get ample proof from my friends and followers that I’m preaching’ to the choir. But lately I’ve also received a few of precisely the kind of responses I might have expected from some of Trump’s supporters. Comments like “You lost; get over it!,” “I’m sick and tired of all you cry-babies bitching and moaning!,” and “It’s your turn to be a loser, college boy; why don’t you just man-up?” And those are the polite ones.

Really! We’re the cry-babies?

AN INVISIBLE HOLE
So…a big chunk (not a majority, mind you) of the American electorate apparently has perceived themselves as oppressed, muzzled, getting short-changed in their share of the American Dream. This despite ample proof that, overall, the quality of life in this country has never, ever, been better.

After the Obama administration’s helped dig us out of the deep hole dug during the “Dubya” years, we now enjoy the best job growth in 18 yrs.; strongest dollar in three decades; gas a bit over $2 per gallon; unemployment cut in half; the annual Bush deficit cut by two-thirds; recovered housing market; growing exports; Dow Jones average tripled and surging once again…

What am I missing?

What they'd really lost...was their ability to control.

They say they’d lost their voice, their power. And even some more charitable liberals than I believe them. But I’m going to call them on it. What they’d really lost during those eight hard-fought years of progressives’ gains was not the American dream. It was their ability to control.

And it was not simply control over themselves and their own fortunes they so lusted for. It was authority—control over land, people not like them, other countries, ideas they see as threatening to their rather narrow quasi-religious ideology. That’s what this election was really about.

LILY-WHITE CLONES
For the last eight years, while we progressives have been thinking positively, constructively, of ways to make the world a better place—connecting people; creating opportunity; trying, against the best-funded, most powerful lobbying efforts in history, to preserve a natural environment we’re proud to pass on to our kids and grandkids—conservative ideologues have put all their eggs into one big basket of NO!

He held out a few cheap promises like a candy bar
          to a health nut's child.

By their own admission, their one and only goal during the eight-year administration of one of the most intelligent, visionary, positive-minded, decent presidents in history has been to derail absolutely anything he’s proposed. Not exert their own version of leadership, not offer constructive alternatives, not paint a picture of a better America; no, just stifle every glimmer of hope for a kinder, gentler nation.

What is it you want, folks? Federal hands off of public lands so you can gouge out more mineral wealth on the cheap, wallow in more ATV mud holes and build more rifle ranges? A sub-prime mortgage on the environment we leave our grandchildren in return for a few jobs in unsustainable industries? Your own little nation of God-fearin,’ lily-white clones?

THE PRICE OF A CANDY BAR
Well, looks like your political temper tantrum has, against all odds, gotten you the attention you so craved. And now the rest of us must live, for at least the next four years, with the consequences: a president who—at precisely the moment in history when we most need a leader with a constructive vision—has already proven himself an utterly ill-prepared, emotionally unstable, uncurious, vulgar, pompous, self-serving narcissist.

And none of this charlatan’s destruction should come as any surprise to those who ganged up—apparently with a little help from one of our nation’s arch enemies—to push him into office. He held out a few cheap promises like a candy bar to a health nut’s child. And you totally reached out and grabbed it.

Congratulations, you poor, self-styled victims, your little hissy fit worked big-time. You little brats set the house afire over a fucking Milky Way.

“We the people chose a man who has shredded our values, our morals, our compassion, our tolerance, our decency, our sense of common purpose, our very identity — all the things that, however tenuously, made a nation out of a country.”  ~ NEAL GABLER
